School sports shut down again

RITZVILLE – Lind-Ritzville Cooperative Athletic Director Greg Whitmore announced Sunday, Nov. 14, basketball and wrestling camps will be postponed until further notice and the weight room closed.

“It was in response to the governor’s mandate, even though it doesn’t start until Wednesday,” Whitmore said Monday, Nov. 15. “We just decided it’s best. We’re bringing in athletes from different counties, different towns and different circumstances. Our focus needs to be, right now, on moving our new education model forward, which we just started at the high school today.”

November 15 was the first day any junior high or high school students had been on campus for a full day.

“So we decided just to cancel for today, and try to find some clarity; make sure they were talking about schools as well,” Whitmore said, adding they did get that confirmed.

“Right now, we don’t want any setbacks if we can help it,” Whitmore continued. “So far, we’ve had some positive cases, but none of it has been spread within the school. It’s all come from outside the school and we’ve had to quarantine; which we know we’ve done, so we just want to keep that going.”

Whitmore said he didn’t expect information coming from a WIAA meeting scheduled for Nov. 17 to change the school’s athletic plans right now.

“But we’ll see where the discussion goes, for sure,” Whitmore said.
