OTHELLO – A local boy is in custody after being arrested Monday morning, Aug. 29, at his home in connection with possession a a stolen handgun and stolen vehicle.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office has yet to release the name and age of the boy.
The boy was booked into the Martin Hall juvenile detention center on charges of possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest, Sheriff Dale Wagner said, noting additional charges may be pending.
The boy was identified Saturday night, Aug. 27, in connection with recovery of a stolen vehicle near the intersection of 14th and Cypress avenues, a Sheriff’s Office reports show.
According to the report, a deputy on patrol was alerted by his new Axon license plate reader that he had just passed a 2019 Nissan Altima reported stolen from Moses Lake.
The deputy turned around and followed the Altima, which had turned onto Cypress, the report said, noting that as the vehicle approached the driver parked, fled on foot and eluded the deputy, records show.
Deputies were able to identify the juvenile and that he was formerly a Moses Lake resident now living in Othello, records show.
After securing the vehicle, deputies obtained and executed a search warrant on the Altima and located a loaded Glock 23 .40 caliber handgun, records show.
That gun was reported stolen in Spokane, records show.
On Monday morning, deputies went to the boys current residence and arrested him for suspicion of possession of a stolen firearm, possession of stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.
Sheriff Wagner credited his deputies, the Othello Police Department and the new license plate reader for the apprehension.
“We are grateful for the new equipment that helps us do our work,” he said.
