Local students receive scholarships
LIND – Graduates of the former Lind High School gathered Saturday, May 6, to honor several classes as well as this year's local Lind-Ritzville graduating seniors.
The Lind Alumni Association recognized the classes of 1993, 1983, 1973 and 1963 during the gala luncheon.
Carson Shaver, of Lind, was also recognized.
The upcoming Lind-Ritzville High School graduate was presented two $1,000 scholarships, including the Lind Alumni and Virginia Moorman Moore scholarships.
The son of Kyle and Darla Shaver, he will attend Western Washington University in Bellingham in the fall.
In addition to those scholarships, two graduating Lind-Ritzville seniors received $1,000 Jackson David Weaver Foundation scholarships.
Melissa Pfeifer and Jahteya Taylor were presented the awards, presented by Reid Weaver, Rachel Weaver and Valerie Jenkins-Weaver.
Those scholarships memorialize the late Jackson David Weaver, who passed away from leukemia in 2006. Reid Weaver is the father of Jackson David Weaver.
The family funded one of the $1,000 scholarships.
"Reid's friend, Derrell Johnson, also chipped in another $1,000 so we could give two of these awards out," the Lind Alumni Association reported. "This scholarship is special for remembering Jackson and it's also unique in that students do not apply.
Students are nominated by teachers, volunteers, coaches, business owners and other community members familiar with the student's passion, determination and commitment to learning.
The scholarship is intended to reward and encourage students who are passionate about learning, but may not have exceptional grades, and those students who work hard, but may not be top performers or star athletes.
This scholarship seeks to reward those who always strive to improve and, by doing so, inspire others.
"Congratulations to David Hinkle and Jahteya Taylor," the Alumni Association said.
